Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Carmel High School student Benjamin Akinbola with a four-year $20,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Akinbola has served as the captain of his intramural basketball team, vice president and president of DECA, a student leader in the Christ Community Church youth group, and is a graduate of the Center for Leadership Development. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Akinbola was selected by an area director of Student Venture as a mentor and co-leader of a program for middle school boys. Additionally, he has received recognition as an AP Scholar, was chosen as a National Achievement semi-finalist and is a National Merit Commended Scholar. He plans to pursue a degree in business.
