Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Bishop Dwenger High School student Christina Hooper with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.


Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.


Hooper has received recognition as a Dwenger Scholar, acceptance into the National Honor Society, selection as a National Merit Semi-Finalist, and selection as a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.


She has participated in karate, the Robotics Club, Science Club, Marching Band, Pep Band, and Show Choir Band.

She also has served as editor of her high school newspaper, and this year she has served as Editor-In-Chief. Hooper has served as an ICU volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital, volunteer at Miller’s Merry Manor and A Day Away Adult Daycare.


Hooper plans to major in international studies with a goal of becoming an international documentary creator or a multimedia journalist.
