Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented George Rogers Clark High School student Fred Diego with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.


Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Diego has been a member of both the varsity tennis and swimming teams. He also served as the Co-Captain of the swimming team.

Diego is a member of Business Professionals of America and the Science Olympiad team. In addition, he has been an editor, columnist and writer of the high school yearbook and an editor, graphic designer and columnist the high school newspaper.


Diego works as a text translator and teacher’s aid at the Area Career Center. He plans to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.
