Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Bishop Dwenger High School student Isaac Evans with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Evans has been selected as a National Merit Commended Student, a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar and a Bishop Dwenger Academic Excellence Scholar.

He has been involved in Students Against Destructive Decisions, Latin Club, peer tutor, and has served as a Bishop Dwenger Ambassador. He is a four-year member of both the football and wrestling teams, and participated for two years as a member of the rugby team. As a senior, Evans was selected as captain of his football team.

Evans was chosen to participate in a dual-enrollment college level Marine Biology class with IPFW. He volunteers for Saints Alive, Saints on the Move and the Community Harvest Food Bank.
