Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Indiana Academy student Janelle Williams with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Williams has served as a Student Council representative and Student Council secretary, president of the Senior Committee and as an Academy Ambassador and a Peer Assistant.

Williams has participated in the French Club and the PEARLS Breast Cancer Awareness Group. She is a member of both the varsity tennis and varsity cheerleading teams.

Williams has won academic awards in French and Geometry and has been an Oratory Contest participant. She volunteers at the Operation Care Food Bank and the Muncie Children’s Museum.
