Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented North Central High School student Joseph Haskins III with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Haskins has served on the Student Council, as president and stage manager of the North Central Stage Crew, as music director and radio host for WJEL 89.3 FM, and as a student facilitator for North Central Panther Quest.

Haskins has academic letters and leadership awards, has been selected as Phi Beta Kappa award recipient, and placed second in the regional science fair for a tuberculosis project.

He is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and has participated in a minority engineering program. He serves as a mentor in the PEERS program and is the sound board operator for Solid Word Bible Church.

Haskins works as an engineering research intern at Eli Lilly & Co. and plans to study mechanical engineering.
