Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School student Marie Rodriguez with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Rodriguez has played piano for nine years. She attended the Lead America Youth Conference in San Francisco and was awarded a St. Monica Art Scholarship in 2006.

Rodriguez has served as vice president of the Anime Club and participated as a member of the Chemistry Team. She is a four-year member of the Determined to Benefit Disabilities Club, a group formed to help disabled children.

Rodriguez has been an active volunteer at her church and at the St. Vincent DePaul Distribution Center, Cambridge Nursing Home, and the North United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen.
