Meet the 2011 Lugar Scholars - Devin Brown

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Columbus East High School student Devin Brown with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Brown has demonstrated leadership as a Peer Tutor and as a two-year captain of the varsity soccer team.  Brown has played soccer since the age of five, and has received recognition for his soccer skills from the Javanon Soccer Club, the Indiana Academy, and the Westside United Soccer Club.

Brown has participated as member of both the National Honor Society and the German Club.  He has served as a volunteer for the Columbus Area Arts Council and the Ivy Tech Foundation, and holds a part-time job.

Brown is interested in the fields of economics and finance and hopes to pursue a career as a financial analyst.  He plans to attend the University of Indianapolis in the fall.
