Meet the 2011 Lugar Scholars - Mayra Martinez

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Portage High School student Mayra Martinez with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.


Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.


Martinez has been a member of the Portage High School Choraliers for the past three years.  She has won multiple gold medals in the Vocal Solo, Large Ensemble, and Barbershop Quartet through ISSMA Solo and Ensemble contests. She has participated in the Science Olympiad, YAR Book Club, Portage H.S. Diversity Club, Recycling Club, French Club, swim team, Academic Superbowl, and both the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.


Martinez volunteers at the Portage YMCA, serves as a Mentor for At-Risk Freshman, and participates in numerous community fundraisers such as Dancers Against Cancer and the Furry Fun Fair.  She also studied in France as part of the IU Honors Program for French.


She plans to attend Notre Dame and pursue a major in French and International Studies.
