Meet the 2011 Lugar Scholars - Olivia Sanchez-Felix

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Zionsville High School student Olivia Sanchez-Felix with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Sanchez-Felix has demonstrated leadership by serving as vice president of the O Ambassadors, Captain of the JV Soccer Team, and as a counselor at the “Creando Lazos” Soccer Camp for Underprivileged Children. She is a member of the Boone County Kiwanis Global Youth Leadership Academy and a certified U.S. Grade 8 Soccer Referee.

She has participated in numerous activities including the Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Club, Girls’ Cross Country Team, and is an active member of the Advent Lutheran Church youth group. She also spent time abroad in Valencia, Spain as part of the IU Honors Program in Foreign Languages.

Sanchez-Felix intends to study chemistry in pursuit of a career in medicine.
