The Application Process
The process for applying for the scholarship begins each September when information letters and applications are mailed to all high school principals in Indiana. Each high school is asked to nominate two students - one male and one female. To be eligible, the students must meet the following criteria:
After the high school selects their two nominees, those students fill out an application packet which is due at the beginning of December. From all of the applications, twenty Lugar Finalists are selected and come to Indianapolis to interview. A selection committee, comprised of many former Lugar Scholars and Board members, select two $20,000 and eight $4,000 scholarship winners after the interviews. The awards are presented by Senator Lugar at a banquet held each Spring.
The recipients become members of a very select group as they are chosen for academic excellence and leadership potential - not on the basis of financial need.
Anyone interested in applying for the Fund for Hoosier Excellence scholarships should talk to their high school guidance counselor and principal in September of their senior year.
