Meet the 2010 Lugar Scholars

Senator Lugar with Evan DominguezU.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented Portage High School student Evan Dominguez with a four-year $4,000 college scholarship on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state.

Given through the Fund for Hoosier Excellence (FHE), ten high school African-American, Native American or Hispanic seniors are named Lugar Scholars each year. Eight $4,000 scholarships are awarded and two $20,000 scholarships are awarded, one each to a boy and a girl. Each recipient must study at an Indiana college or university.

Dominguez has served as vice president and representative of the Student Council, president of the National Honor Society, chairman of the Portage Youth Commission, and an Alumni Liason for the Diversity Club.

He has participated in Natural Helpers, Captain’s Council, and Swim Team. Dominguez was selected as the school’s Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Ambassador and State Ambassador at the World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C.

In addition, he has served as a volunteer and coach for the Special Olympics, a peer minister for the “Teens Are People, Too” retreat, and lifeguard for the Deep River Water Park. He is planning to study chemistry and pursue a career as a pediatrician.
